Abstract

This thesis was conducted to find the types of acculturations and the impact of it toward mentality in the novel The Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter. There are two research question of this reasearch: 1) What are the types of acculturation are found in the novel The Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter. 2) How are the impacts of acculturation toward mentality in the novel The Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter. In this research, the theory used is the sociology of literature approach using Berry’s theory of acculturation. The methodology used is qualitative research where the researcher presents the problem descriptively. The researcher collects data from the novel as the primary data of this study, and the researcher analyzes and interprets data from conversations and narratives in the novel The Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter.The result of the research, the researcher found four types of acculturation with thirty-seven data, namely assimilation, separation, integration, and marginalization. The result of the types of acculturation shows that the separation has three causes, namely the differences in lifestyles and cultural values, conflict of identity, and cultural alienations.
