This research focuses on the effects of hegemonic power on escapism in the novel The Great Gatsby. The research objectives are to: 1.)To find the forms of hegemonic power found in the novel The Great Gatsby 2.)To describe the hegemonic power affects escapism in the novel The Great Gatsby. This study employs two theories: Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony and Yi-Fu Tuan's theory of escapism. A qualitative descriptive method was used. The findings reveal three forms of hegemony: economic, political, and ideological. To analyze escapism, the study categorizes it into three types: physical, mental/imaginative, and emotional. Based on the research conducted, it can be found the effect of hegemonic power on escapism, namely the first effect of political hegemony on physical, mental/imagination and emotional escapism, second is the effect of economic hegemony on physical, mental/imagination and emotional escapism, third is the effect of economic hegemony on physical, mental/imagination and emotional escapism.
